129 U.S. Reps Sign Letter Supporting Funds for Humanitarian Demining
On May 1st, 2024, Representatives Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA-6) and Darrell Issa (R-CA-48), along with 127 of their colleagues, submitted a bipartisan letter to the House and Senate State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittees encouraging support for humanitarian demining programs – record-breaking support!
The letter calls for $290 million for the State Department’s Conventional Weapons Destruction (CWD) programs, which operate in more than 40 countries around the world. CWD programs prevent civilian casualties, support survivors of mine accidents, return land to displaced families, and promote international stability. These programs also secure government-held weapons stockpiles, combating the black-market arms trade, preventing dangerous weapons like MANPADS from being diverted by terror groups, and protecting regional and international security. The requested funding includes $80 million for Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, which would be critical to supporting security, promoting positive U.S. leadership, and strengthening diplomacy, and clearing U.S. legacy ordnance from the Vietnam war. The letter also includes allocations for Angola, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka at above the prior year’s level, and supports sustained funding for demining in Ukraine – which is still facing unprecedented contamination.
