On May 1, 2024, Representatives Bill Huizenga (R-MI-4) and Dina Titus (D-NV-1) led a letter to House State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee leadership, along with 11 of their colleagues. The letter supports $1 million for a USAID response to landmines and other explosives in Burma, which have created a humanitarian crisis as casualties continue to increase. While there remain political challenges to full clearance in Burma, this funding would allow USAID to provide risk education, supply kits, and assistance to landmine victims, providing a measure of much-needed relief.
HALO thanks Representatives Huizenga and Titus for their leadership, as well as the other 11 Representatives who signed their support for such a critical program. This funding would help civilians stay safe around explosives, protect IDPs and vulnerable communities, and advance U.S. leadership in the region.
