Congressional UXO/Demining Caucus presented: Women in Demining
On Friday, March 19th, Representatives Jackie Speier and Bill Johnson, Co-Chairs of the UXO/Demining Caucus, celebrated International Women’s Day with a roundtable discussion about the role of women in the demining sector.
They were joined by Megan Dwyer, Program Manager at HALO-Kosovo, Delia Maphosa, Community Liaison Manager at MAG-Zimbabwe, and Emma Atkinson, Branch Manager for East Asia and Pacific, South and Central Asia, and Western Hemisphere Operations in the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement through the Political Military affairs Bureau in the Department of State.
The discussion gave a glimpse into the heroic, life-saving work women are doing in the demining sector across the world. From Kosovo to Zimbabwe, similar sentiments were shared: Women can do just as well, if not better than their male deminer counterparts. They only need the opportunity to work in these capacities.
