On July 25th, the Eleanor Crook Foundation and HALO Trust co-hosted an educational Congressional staff briefing focused on humanitarian landmine removal and malnutrition in the Horn of Africa.
This event drew attention to the malnutrition crisis in the Horn of Africa, including how the presence of landmines and explosives impacts food security. The discussion included humanitarian demining efforts in Somaliland, Somalia, and Ethiopia, programs to address hunger in the region, and security considerations.
Opening remarks were provided by Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA-51), who serves a Ranking Member of the Africa Subcommittee on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as General James L. Jones, Chairman and CEO of Jones Group International. Panelists then included Lesly Weber McNitt, Senior Director for North American Advocacy and Communications at the Eleanor Crook Foundation and Chris Whatley, Executive Director for The HALO Trust (USA). Following audience Q&A, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA-6) provided video remarks to close the event.
Thank you to the Eleanor Crook Foundation for generously sponsoring the event and to the esteemed speakers for contributing to the rich discussion.
