Congressional UXO/Demining Caucus hosts event on demining efforts in Afghanistan
On Thursday, February 4th, the bipartisan Congressional UXO/Demining Caucus hosted their first briefing of 2021 - a webinar focused on “Advancing Stability in Afghanistan through Demining”.
The event was led by caucus co-chair, Representative Bill Johnson (R-OH), and Kate Adams, a staff member from the office of co-chair Representative Jackie Speier. Panelists included: Stanley L. Brown, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Programs and Operations in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs in the Department of State, Roya Rahmani, the Afghan Ambassador to the United States, as well as Dr. Farid Homayoun, the Program Manager for the HALO Trust Afghanistan.
This discussion highlighted the accomplishments of the United States in removing unexploded ordnance and remnants of war in Afghanistan, the role of women in this sector and region, as well as the urgent work that still needs to be done.
The HALO Trust has been operating in Afghanistan since 1988, and we currently employ over 2,000 local Afghans on this program – making it HALO’s largest demining program. HALO’s work in Afghanistan is instrumental in stabilizing Afghanistan, saving lives, and revitalizing communities.
