On March 9th, 2026, U.S. Congressional Representatives Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA-6) and Young Kim (R-CA-40) submitted a bipartisan letter to the House National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Subcommittee requesting $271.703 million for humanitarian demining and weapons security (known as Conventional Weapons Destruction (CWD) programs) in the fiscal year 2027 budget. The request also includes $80 million for these efforts in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, which would save lives, promote positive U.S. leadership, and remove U.S. legacy ordnance from the Vietnam War. A record 149 Members signed the letter this year, representing Congress’s strong bipartisan commitment to humanitarian demining.
Around the world, demining and weapons security programs promote safety, strengthen U.S. security partnerships and project American soft power, as demining directly benefits large swathes of the population, while US flags worn on deminers’ body armor provide a highly visible demonstration of U.S. support. These programs have tangible outputs and end dates and immediately return land to local communities, catalyzing economic development, opening trade opportunities, and helping to reduce global food prices. CWD programs keep explosive materials and weapons out of the hands of terrorist groups, cartels, and other criminals through efforts to secure government weapons stockpiles – protecting American security and supporting international stability.
